Possible causes of a heart attack

It is important to know that a heart attack, its medical term, refers to “myocardial infarction”, which means the death of tissues due to a lack of oxygen, and that the heart muscle, like any other muscle inside the human body, requires a constant and continuous supply of blood.

Without blood, heart cells are damaged, resulting in pain or pressure. If the blood supply is not replenished, heart cells may die, and scar tissue may form instead of active heart tissue. Irregular or insufficient blood flow to the heart can result in a potentially fatal abnormal heart rhythm.

As a result, we can say that the causes of a heart attack are related to a blockage in one or more of the arteries that supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart. These arteries are known as coronary arteries, and they form a crown around the heart.

It should be noted that artery blockage occurs as a result of a blood clot; if the clot is relatively large, it may block blood flow in the artery; and arteriosclerosis is the condition in which the coronary arteries are narrowed as a result of atherosclerosis, and atherosclerosis is one of the leading causes of a heart attack.

A coronary artery spasm, which blocks blood flow to part of the heart muscle, is an uncommon cause of a heart attack, and toxins such as cocaine can cause such a fatal spasm.
